About Victorine

Welcome to the world of writing!

I firmly believe we can leave our world a little bit better than how we found it.

What better way is there to make an impact than through a memorable piece of writing!  Whether it be fiction or non-fiction, academic or humorous, we all can experience the mysteries of the written word.

As a life long educator, my goal has been to merge the mantle of moral purpose and change agentry to transform lives. This has been a continuous process. My aim is to guide students specifically, but any lifelong learner will find guidance in these pages.

Being an Educator

I have been an educator for over thirty-five years having taught Reading, Language Arts, Study Skills, College Composition, Linguistics and Literacy at the secondary (High School) and tertiary levels in Guyana and the USA. In composition classes, we used the classroom as a forum for writing and publishing. I encouraged students to overcome writing paralysis, invest time in writing and to take their drafts through multiple revisions.

In order to achieve not a flawless paper but a great piece of writing, the paper needed to go through a process of multiple repetitive iterations. This investment of time can pay dividends, since, once published a paper has the capacity to live on to the end of time.

Being an Author

As an educator, I have been teaching writing all my life but at some point, I transitioned into a published author.

In 1974, I produced a study of proverbs while working towards my Bachelors Degree in English. About 20 years later that study formed the basis of my first book, “Proverbial Wisdom From Guyana” which I wrote in 1997 while living and studying in Philadelphia. In my second book, “Anansi Folktales in the Diaspora,” published in 2013, I explore the similarities between Anansi stories in the diaspora.

I am currently working on the final draft of my third book, “Tunde names the Children.” This African naming book is very dear to me as it is a tribute to my late husband, Dr. Cyril Solomon, whom I lost in October 2015.

I also have in draft my fourth non-fiction book, which is a memoir of my late husband’s battle with multiple myeloma.  This therapeutic writing about this past traumatic event and the painful feelings that surrounded it has helped me to come to terms with my husband’s transition and achieve some measure of closure. It is also aimed at providing empathy and bibliotherapy for other readers and writers in the community.

I also provide professional proofreading and editing services primarily in the area of academic writing. You can learn more about those services here.
